Back in medieval times, muleteers used this historic route between the cantons of Bern and neighbouring Valais to transport their wares. Later, they were followed by famous names such as Goethe and Mark Twain. Today, its eventful history and well-maintained paths ensure that the Gemmi region is a popular hiking destination.
