The high-altitude trails lead through an impressive panorama across the Spittelmatte and adjacent plains. Well-groomed tracks forclassic technique and skatingoffer varied circular routes, complemented by a practice area – perfect for beginners, leisure skiers, and ambitious runners.Cross-country skiing with dogs (skijoring)is also possible on selected sections.

Feeder trails

The two feeder trails lead from the mountain station area to the high-altitude trails on the Spittelmatte. They provide access to a varied cross-country skiing world with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.

Spittelmatte cross-country ski trail

The classic route on Sunnbüel: open, sunny, and particularly scenic. The route runs through Swiss stone pine forests, along streams, and across the wide Spittelmatte plateau.

Schwarzbach cross-country ski trail

A particularly atmospheric trail through peaceful natural surroundings. Ideal for anyone who wants to combine cross-country skiing with an experience of nature.

Mittelbach cross-country ski trail

A harmonious route that blends pleasantly into the landscape and allows for a relaxed return journey.

Spittelmatte cross-country skiing chalet

There is a small cross-country skiing chalet at the starting point of the high-altitude trails. It offers shelter, seating, and a restroom—ideal for a break between laps.

  • A Swiss cross-country skiing pass, a Kandersteg regional pass, or a day or week pass is required to use the trails.

  • Day tickets are available at the ticket office at the valley station.

  • You can purchase trail passes and season passes online or on site.

  • Changing rooms, lockers, and showers are available at the mountain station.

GUIDELINES
  • Consideration: Be mindful of less experienced individuals and do not endanger anyone.
  • Signaling and running direction: Observe the signals and instructions. Always run in the specified direction.
  • Choosing which lane to use: Get on and off cleanly to protect the lane. Keep to the right. On double or multiple lanes, the slower vehicle should drive on the right.
  • Overtaking: When overtaking on single lanes, do so on the left side of the lane. On double lanes, use the left lane for overtaking.
  • Oncoming traffic: In the event of oncoming traffic (runners in the same lane), move to the right.
  • Poles: Keepyour poles close to your body when overtaking, being overtaken, and crossing paths with others to avoid endangering anyone.
  • Speed: Adjust your speed on downhill slopes to suit the terrain, visibility, and your ability.
  • Keep the running track clear: Take a breather and chat away from the running track. If you fall, move to safety away from the track.
  • Assistance: In the event of an accident on the running track, you are obliged to provide assistance.
  • Waste: Do not leave any waste on the trail or in the terrain.

What you should know.

What payment methods can I use?

You can pay at the ticket machines and at the ticket office with all major credit and debit cards as well as with Twint. Cash and REKA checks are also accepted. Payment with REKA checks is only possible at the ticket office. Further information and tickets can be found directly in our ticket shop.

How do I get there by train (public transport)?

You can reach Kandersteg by train from Spiez and Brig. There is a bus (AFA) to Kandersteg from Adelboden and Frutigen. The walk from the train station takes approx. 10–15 minutes. From June to October, there is a local bus service from the train station to the valley station for every train arrival/departure.

What outdoor guidelines apply when using toilets?

Public toilets are located at the mountain and valley stations, as well as at the mountain restaurant on the lake shore. Additional toilets are available in Oeschinensee. Please avoid using the toilet in nature. However, if you do need to use the "natural toilet," please do not leave any paper, bags, or wet wipes behind.

Where can I park? Is it possible to reserve a parking space?

Parking spaces cannot currently be reserved. Parking spaces in Kandersteg are limited at weekends and during the summer. From around 12 noon onwards, there may be no parking spaces available – we recommend arriving early. Parking spaces are available for guests at the valley station from 6 a.m. until the evening. Hikers heading to Oeschinensee should use the hiking parking spaces in the village (lower hiking parking rates). No vehicles are allowed to enter at night. Vehicles are limited to a maximum length of 5 meters and a maximum height of 2 meters. Paid parking spaces and parking spaces for larger vehicles are located in the village and at the Schützenhaus.

Are there lockers available at the mountain or valley station?

Yes, there are lockers and ski racks at the mountain and valley stations. Payment is made digitally by debit card, Visa/Mastercard, Twint, or cash. Weekly and seasonal passes for lockers and ski racks are available at the ticket office.

How are the ski patrol and rescue services organized?

Daily monitoring of marked and open slopes and trails ends with a final check at 5:00 p.m. Outside of operating hours, all slopes and winter hiking trails are closed and are not secured against hazards such as avalanche blasting, snow groomers, etc. In the event of an incident during operating hours, please contact the SOS patrol at +41 79 481 01 12. Outside of operating hours, please contact REGA 1414 or 112.

What outdoor guidelines apply in wildlife quiet zones and protected areas?

Entering wildlife sanctuaries, plant protection areas, and restricted areas is not permitted. Information boards mark the protected areas where special rules apply. Never leave the marked paths and trails and always observe the information boards on site. Plants may not be dug up, picked, or trampled.

What outdoor guidelines apply to waste collection and separation?

Collect your trash and dispose of it at the waste stations. Waste separation stations are located at the mountain and valley stations, at the toboggan run, and along the main hiking trails.

What outdoor guidelines apply when providing first aid?

In an emergency, call the emergency services immediately on 1414. In winter, you should also inform the SOS patrol (0041 79 481 01 12). There is an SOS room at both the mountain and valley stations. Defibrillators are located at the mountain and valley stations and at the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant, near the lake shore.
